As a team we are making significant investments into our tech stack by improving our data structures, increasing automation, scalability, and software quality. We have a challenging problem of building a comprehensive database of payer policy data and keeping it up to date.


Our technology stack is JavaScript, PHP, Python and Go, with PostgreSQL as our primary data store. Our single page application is written in React with D3. Many of us are full stack developers and we care deeply about building quality products.

Responsibilities



  • Provide technical leadership to the team. Including, but not limited to:




    • Query performance tuning assistance




    • Database handling best practices and explanation of advanced features




    • Guidance and recommendations to the management team






  • Work with Engineering and management to identify and resolve database performance issues as they arise, and make recommendations for improvements




  • Proactively identify database performance impediments and resolve them by proposing and delivering changes to the codebase




  • Contribute to projects to achieve project goals and consult with other project teams and departments to share best practices and other knowledge




  • Work towards departmental goals and objectives like improving accuracy of technical project estimates, improving database resiliency, reliability, scalability and performance




  • As a project's technical lead, collaborate with teams outside of Engineering to ensure that all stakeholders understand project goals, requirements and realistic timelines



Qualifications



  • 5+ years experience supporting, tuning and administering PostgreSQL databases




  • Expert level knowledge of PostgreSQL, its query planner, query profiling, benchmarking and performance tuning, connection pooling/pgpool




  • Experience with distributed systems, database partitioning, replication and sharding




  • Experience with building and maintaining high availability architecture




  • Experience with AWS Aurora and RDS for PostgreSQL




  • Experience in various data systems (relational databases, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, BI systems) and migrating data across multiple systems




  • Experience working with large datasets — tens or hundreds of millions of rows




  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.




  • Excellent debugging, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills.




  • Great communication skills (written and verbal)




  • Ability to learn quickly using both internal and external resources




Good to have:




  • Experience with different database technologies such as NoSQL and OLAP, TimescaleDB or other TSDBs




  • Experience with other AWS services such as S3/Glacier, Athena, RedShift




  • Experience with building data ETL pipelines




  • Experience with Splunk and SPL




  • Experience with load testing, stress/fatigue testing
